The main project comprises design services related to the water transmission system of Mountain Access Roads/Oxagon to the Red Desert (upper valley). Its aims at providing the necessary infrastructure to deliver water from Oxagon desalination plant to upper valley and consists of four pumping stations and a transmission line of DN 1,800 mm carbon steel pipes.
The project encompasses three access roads: Access Road-2 (RD-2), Access Road-4 (RD-4), and Access Road-9 (RD-9). RD-2 has a length of approximately 14 km and runs through a valley located in mountainous area. This road is aimed to accommodate special trucks transporting 27-meter pipes and trucks transporting tunnel excavated rocks. RD-4 has a length of approximately 2.4 km to serve tunnel-2 and links with highway 80. RD-9 has a total length of 5 km and starts at bridge and is to be used for storm drainage from the flooded area in the foot of the mountain on the other side.

The project comprises a road bridge, Radial Spine (2), and a storm water network in N4 area. The bridge has a length of 101.5 m and width of 15 m. The bridge height is the same as the Road a Tunnel at level +312. Additionally, a roundabout at the end of the bridge allows the vehicles to turn around safely.

Due to cancelation of Mussalah building, a Radial Spine (2) is designed to allow access to N4-3 and N4-4 areas.

Also, the storm water storage is located in N4-3 area to collect storm water from Radial Spine 1 and Radial Spine 2. Water collection is done by shifting the tanks, manholes, and pipes’ networks out of N4 area.

Utilities serving the four zones (N4-1 to N4-4) occupy a technical gallery (TG) that is located below the road level to accommodate dry and wet utilities.

ECG structural scope of work includes reviewing and validating the following:

  • Analysis of the bridges through 2D/3D models
  • Analysis of the substructure elements for the bridges/flyovers through 3D models and SAP2000 program (piers, abutments, and back walls)
  • Detailed cross sections and elevations for the structural elements
  • Abutments, piers, and pile caps’ reinforcement details

Hamad International Airport (HIA) is undergoing an expansion plan in several stages aiming at increasing the annual capacity of the airport to accommodate the growing number of passengers. The project encompasses raising the capacity of the terminal building to accommodate 53 million passengers per year (MPAX) by 2022. Additionally, early work packages covering the secondary works serving the expansion are released to be carried out independently.

The Remote Transfer Baggage Facility (RTBF) is planned to accommodate baggage-handling requirements with a transfer time of more than 3 hours. The baggage meeting these criteria will be temporarily stored in the RTBF to minimize congestion in the terminal building.

A comprehensive site analysis identified the implantation possibilities and constrains with regards to the existing infrastructure and surrounding buildings. The master planning was then developed to optimize the different buildings arrangement to meet the programmatic and technical requirements of the baggage handling system and the operational flow of circulating vehicles and staff.

The facility is located on the airside of HIA and comprised the following buildings:

  • Remote Transfer Baggage Facility Building (RTBF Building)
  • Early Container Storage Building (ECS)
  • Open MEP Yard

The design seeks aesthetical integration with the nearby buildings, while considering the visual proximity to the Terminal’s South Node Halls and the airport’s main access way. The forms and materials were selected with the intention of deconstructing the monolithic volume of the RTBF building, and achieving modern sleek lines, which deviate from the typical industrial shed-like design.
